How to Keep Your Used Car Cool in UAE Summers: Tips Every Driver Should Know

Driving in the UAE in the summer season isn’t just about dealing with high temperatures. It's about protecting yourself and your vehicle from the harsh effects of extreme heat. With temperatures often soaring above 45°C, your car can turn into a furnace if you're not taking the right precautions.

For those driving used car, staying cool becomes even more important. Older components can be more sensitive to heat; a little care can go a long way. Whether commuting through Dubai traffic or planning a road trip across the Emirates, here are some essential tips to keep your car and yourself cool this summer.

1. Park in the Shade Whenever Possible

One of the simplest ways to protect your car is by parking under a shade. Either natural or covered parking. Constant exposure to direct sunlight can damage the dashboard, steering wheel, and upholstery. If shade isn’t available, try to position the car so the front faces away from the sun to reduce direct exposure on the steering and dashboard.

2. Use Windshield and Window Sunshades

Invest in a good windshield sunshade. These reflective covers can block a significant portion of the sunlight and keep the cabin noticeably cooler. Side window sunshades are also helpful, especially if you have passengers or kids in the back seat.

Even if you’re parking for a short time, using a sunshade can prevent the cabin temperature from rising too quickly.

3. Slightly Crack the Windows

If it’s safe and secure, leave your windows slightly open (just a few millimeters). This allows the hot air inside your car to escape and helps with ventilation. It can reduce the oven-like feel when you return to your parked car.

There are also window vent visors that can help you crack your windows even when it’s raining or dusty outside.

4. Consider Legal Window Tinting

Window tinting isn’t just for style. It serves a real purpose in UAE weather. A good quality tint blocks UV rays, reduces glare, and helps maintain a cooler interior. Just make sure your tinting percentage complies with UAE traffic laws to avoid fines.

5. Keep the A/C System Well-Maintained

Your air conditioning system is your best friend in the summer. Ensure it's working at peak efficiency by regularly checking:

  • Refrigerant levels
  • Cabin air filters
  • Blower speed and airflow
  • Vents and the thermostat function

If your A/C isn’t cooling fast enough, it’s time to have it inspected, don’t wait until it completely fails on a hot day.

6. Cooling Seat Covers or Ventilated Seats

Leather and dark upholstery absorb heat quickly, making seats almost unbearable to sit on. Cooling seat covers are a great option; they plug into your car’s power outlet and circulate cool air through the fabric. If your car doesn’t have built-in ventilated seats, this is a worthwhile investment.

7. Cover the Steering Wheel and Dashboard

Simple accessories like a steering wheel cover or dashboard cloth can protect against extreme heat. A burning hot steering wheel isn’t just uncomfortable; it can be dangerous if you're caught off guard.

Use reflective dash covers or a light towel when parking for longer periods in direct sunlight.

8. Monitor Engine Temperature and Coolant Levels

In high heat, your car’s engine works harder. Check coolant levels regularly and keep an eye on the temperature gauge while driving. If the needle starts to climb, stop and let the engine cool down.

A radiator flush or a coolant top-up before peak summer begins is also recommended, especially for older cars.

9. Battery & Tire Care in Heat

Heat can shorten your battery life and increase the risk of tire blowouts. Ensure your battery is in good condition, and always check tire pressure. Hot roads can cause overinflation and wear. Inspect tires regularly for cracks, bulges, or worn tread.
